What a great day to get out into the garden! Things being what they are, this is going to be a very good year to plant vegetables for the table. I started pruning my roses and stone fruits today, in between the Rose Parade and football watching breaks. The Rose Parade seemed a little flat this year, although it was nice to see and hear Stephanie Edwards back in the booth.

Just to close out the old year, my ‘official’ Fire Mountain rain gauge registered 2.8” of rain for December; this is at the top of the hill between Yucca and Bailey. The way some of the cells came through, there could be substantial variation 3 blocks away! That rain was really welcome. Unfortunately, most of us also received a letter from our beloved City Water Dept., telling us that there will be substantial rate increases and potential water cutbacks. No mention of a moratorium on building permits and water meters. We have to cut back and pay more just so there can be more new houses. Whatever your opinion, write a letter to the Water Dept and the City Council (see the links on the Friends of Fire Mountain Web page)

The January Plantings section has been updated at the top of the blog, so check it out and feel free to ask questions or comment.
